October SATURDAY, OCTOBER 17, 2009 @ 8:30 AM ANNUAL FALL TREE FARM TOUR Foster, RI DIRECTIONS The Rhode Island Tree Farm Program is conducting its annual Fall Tour at three adjacent Tree Farms in Foster and Glocester this year, in conjunction with the RI
Coverts Project. The tour will be hosted by Norm & Janet Hammond, Dick & Deborah Went, and Paul Gale. The meeting site for the tour is at 25 Hartford Pike (Route 101)
in Foster, just west of its intersection with Route 102. The tour is free and open to the public, and no registration is necessary.
All three woodlot owners are certified Tree Farms and are also cooperators of the RI Coverts Project, where woodland owners are trained in wildlife habitat enhancements
on forested land. They will be leading participants on a tour of the property to showcase the actions they have taken to improve forest conditions for wildlife
habitat, as well as other forestry and natural resource conditions. Kate Giorgi, a biologist with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, will be on hand to
talk about the habitat improvements and funding programs available at the NRCS. The tour will emphasize the landscape scale improvements that can be made when
abutting property owners include habitat values of adjacent properties in their management plans, and management activities can be coordinated amongst the owners.
The RI Tree Farm Program is part of the American Tree Farm System, promoting the sustainable management of our forests for wood, water, wildlife, and recreation since
1941. The RI Tree Farm Program sponsors annual tours to highlight the work that certified Tree Farmers do to protect and manage Rhode Island's woodlands. The
Rhode Island program is co-sponsored by the RI Forest Conservator's Organization (RIFCO), the RI DEM's Division of Forest Environment, and Providence Water.
The Rhode Island Coverts Project is an initiative of the Rhode Island Resource Conservation and Development Area Council (RIRC&D) through a Conservation
Innovation Grant provide by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). Anyone interested in participating in the program, or who would like more
information, should contact Paul Boisvert, RI Coverts Project Coordinator, at the RI RC&D Area Council, 60 Quaker Lane, Suite 45, Warwick, RI 02886. Telephone: 401-568-1610 or email sneforest@sneforest.necoxmail.com. |
